Last Birthday Cake starts in a strange, flickering kitchen: milk, instant cocoa, malt and bitter almond, with a candle wick, cork and peace lily keeping it from turning cosy. The middle is the cake itself, boozy and rich, with Armagnac, stollen, brown sugar, vanilla custard, tonka beans and benzoin. Underneath, styrax, tolu balsam, incense and papyrus meet skin, a rope necklace and Chekhov's gun, so the sweetness ends resinous and shadowed.

Samples come in 2 ml and 5 ml, decanted by hand from the original bottle, alongside the 60 ml bottle. Both the Toskovat Discovery Set and the smaller Mini let you sample more of the house.

I made it a long way for somebody with a short fuse anyway. Ran, then walked, then crawled. All for a roadside picnic?

Make a wish they said. Any wish, they keep saying… 

Few of them even know what they wish for.  

My happiest days are probably behind me. A battlefield of fleeting fireworks spurs in front.

Flickering lights are born - then gone before I can even think.  

In the distance a big boulder starts rolling on the hill.
